Refresh Cover

Okay so this is VERY preliminary. I want this magazine to be for YOUNG PEOPLE. I also wanted to steer clear of the trend in environmental stuff to be "cutesy" and "green." I am going to have to work on the banner (it's hard to read) and also the sell lines. The photo is cool, though i'm not sure it is sending the right message. Basically, this is all up for change, but I wanted to put something out there.

Water Feature Final

I think this might be it. Thanks for all of your input. I have to admit, I am glad to put this one to bed. Still not sure which
version(s) I will use in my portfolio. I'd like to think that this is good enough to put in there!

Okay so this week I would like to talk about a link I foudn on this website rather than the website itself. We should all try to submit some work....

There is now a call for entries for the 2007 Adobe Design Achievement awards. This is for students (like us) that have an interest in design and want to gain some recognition. There are a number of different categories, from graphic design to illustration to photography etc. and the only requirement is that you used the Adobe products to create your piece. This is incredibly convenient seeing as we all USE such programs. Again, we should all try and submit something, if for no other reason than to experience what it is like to enter such a competition. But of course, if you happen to win on eof these awards, you get $5,000, a trip to the award ceremony AND lots of nice Adobe products... sooo sweet. Check out the winner from last year for multi-page design. I am loving this!

class musings for january 24-31

This week was jam packed. I was planning to discuss the readings, however after vcisiting Meredith on Friday, I feel the need to comment. It was exciting to pay my first visit to a real-life magazine publisher. After years of imagining what it would be like, and getting impressions from movies and books, Meredith was a little bit of what I expected; but not a lot.

My favourite parts were touring the actual compound (the basement was particularly sccrumptuous!) and sitting in and giving input on the magazine covers. I was so surprised at the number of magazines Meredith publishes, and especially at the number of magazines that they have devoted to almost the same topics. More than ever, I understand the need for your magazine to have a unique voice; which is something that Meredith has to struggle with each day.

Thanks so much for all the feedback! changed the text boxes as-per emem's suggestion. what do you think of these two options? rob's "more cyan" is the blue one and i tried the black to see if the pipes would pop more.

Kelevision poster

Working on this for my bf. He is part of a comedy internet radio show geared towards guys, and it is very explicit. Don't think I like what's going on with the text yet, but I'm working on it.

Breast Cancer Cover

Okay so I CLEARLY can't let this one go. I have changed the display type to be more in line with the style of the rest of the piece. I also reversed the colours to try and emphasize how Heather has created something funny and theatrical out of a grey, heavy issue......
This has been a long and arduous process and I am still not sure if I like the final product. The cover is purposefully "theatrical" to convey Heather Carver's unique coping method. The significance of the seven women is that 1 in 7 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. The grey colour (yes I WILL use Canadian spellings on my blog) represents the gravity of dealing with breast cancer, a reality touched on in the article. Water Feature

This is the water feature that I have been working on. The used the pipes predominantly because I think they are not as obvious as using say, a water droplet as the main attraction on a story about water. The story is about how Columbia has two different water sources and so having pipes running every which way is an attempt to illustrate the differing paths the "essential element" can take. Also I liked the idea of having the text boxes themselves represent the water that is, literally, coming out of the pipes.

blog following january 16-23

Okay so this is a website is basically meant to be used as a muse. It was created in order for creative people (like designers) to go and be inspired. There is a LOT of content on this website including portfolios, photography, illustrations and apparently even flash stuff (which isn't working at the moment). If you only have the attention span for a five minute venture to this site, I recommend the portfolios... there are a few people who have themed work (sort of like Picasso's "blue" and "pink" periods). What is good about these is that they show consistency but a WHOLE lot of creativity. In other words they all look like they belong together and use a lot of the same elements but are ultimately different. netdiver.net

class musings for january 16-23

This week we discussed the (many) requirements for our advanced magazine design class. It is going to be very demanding, but in the best kind of way. This course is to build our portfolios, our web presence, and become critical of others', and our own designs.
