Thanks so much for all the feedback! changed the text boxes as-per emem's suggestion. what do you think of these two options? rob's "more cyan" is the blue one and i tried the black to see if the pipes would pop more.

I like the white boxes and I like the color. I would suggest making the boxes rounded, just like the box on the last spread (on the right). It looks nicer, not so jagged.
The blue you have right now is nice, but it feels too heavy/dark. Maybe you should try playing with hues of cyan, with less black.
just to clarify, i don't think the color looks bad as is, i'm just concerned that the printing quality and the paper quality won't translate it correctly. trust me i've had it happen to me! good luck. i think the pipes look great on the the third page, too! is that for the sidebar--the blank one?
i do like the blue, although maybe - as Rob said - a little lighter shade. Maybe for the sidebar box (I think that's the one on the right on the second page, anyway) you could make its background a 20ish% transparency of your background blue so it stands apart from the other text boxes?
I really like your original one the best. The black is nice as well, although I think the first blue relays the whole "water" feel better...I think you should stick with the original color scheme! The rounded boxes really made a difference too- well done
